  1. Hello

Is there a way we could provide the First URL / Second URL by a query paramter and your website automatically fills in the two Urls and starts the comparison? We are considering your service for using it internally at your company. With this we could save a lot of time passing in the Urls manually.

    Thank you!
    Daniel

  5. As a paid-for extra cost option, what about saving the full contents, original full name and path, hash, and time stamp of each filename on the server after upload? Then files already uploaded need not be uploaded again. And pre-computing a hash on a newly seen client-end file could be used to also avoid uploading duplicates. Also, the results of all comparisons could be cached too, for instant results - caching a bool equal/unequal plus the diff list. Could also perform inferences too concerning predicted result of a comparison of a new file with a cached one. I'm good at…

  6. assuming javascript is available, to cover the case where http compression on uploads is not available or not effective, do local compression of a file pair using javascript in the browser, with file type-specific compressors.

It all depends on whether you can face writing a load of javascript.

    • Second idea: concatenate the two files before upload, because then the combined result will be much more compression-friendly.

    • Third idea: do a basic local diff in the browser using javascript and upload a list of difference sections with duplicated blocks not sent twice - so massive speed-up. Then if files are identical,…

  7. I'm asking about iOS Safari in particular - don't know if this is possible in iOS - but could the file selector UI control be set to start from a convenient point, rather than the current situation where I have to go through many steps again and again? (Pick iCloud, navigate all the way down the tree in n steps and then do it all over again, so twice as many steps to pick two files in the same directory.)

If it is possible to set an initial start path for the file selector UI control, could optionally make the…

  8. I see that this option is available in settings. If I just change it there, it doesn't take effect immediately- unless I've misunderstood somehow- it seems you have to do a new comparison, including all the pain of deselecting the files and waiting ages for the uploads to complete.

    1. Could it be fixed to take effect immediately when you hit ok etc in settings?

    2. It would be far more useful if there were an additional UI button in the main diff window to toggle this setting on the fly? - I have extremely long lines of text. I know there…

    1. Probably not: DiffNow cannot dynamically change splitter orientation since this is done on the server, before the iframe is generated.
    2. Even if we added such button (which we are reluctant to, since adding such buttons would clutter the toolbar), you’s have to recompare. And this would necessarily require to upload files again, since browsers don’t allow to cache client-side files in INPUT (type=“file”) controls due to privacy concerns.

  9. On my iPad Pro / Safari, the UI would be much more usable if the app could optionally recalculate a different layout when the display is rotated between portrait and landscape modes, as currently a lot of screen real estate isn't getting used and I would really like to see more lines.

I wonder if the relevant new advanced CSS media queries would help here ? (Don't know how much is supported in Safari iOS yet.)

DiffNow already responds to screen resizing (it uses CSS media queries). It cannot dynamically change splitter orientation if that’s what you mean since this is done on the server, before the iframe is generated.

  11. I started off the day being close to the limit. I can only assume that my diffs from yesterday afternoon are counted towards today. Have the limit applied to the user based on the user's locale, please!

  12. In the comparsion results page, the file path is removed from the textbox, so it is not possible to know which file is on the left and on the right (you have to remember).
It would be useful if the path is still shown somewhere.

This is intentional. The goal is to make sure that uploaded and once compared files can no longer be compared (the are deleted after comparison on the server for privacy reasons), so the Compare button becomes disabled after files are compared.

Also, you still can see file names in the results frame, in the caption boxes.

  13. I have used DiffNow for quite some time. I always liked it, but previously only had to do the occasional diff here and there. Today, I had to conduct many diff's. Upon hitting the 5 diff limit of a non-logged in user (first time this happened) I immediately googled text diff tool and found many other possible tools, and will not return to diff now. I rather you place ad's, keep it free to use, and have paid customers get more advanced functionality, than a diff cap.

  15. The code used to display side by side now they display one on top and the other on bottom. Which makes it difficult and I can no n longer use. Side by side was very effective. Or is there a setting I can change?
